Fire Safety Workshop in the Second Half of 2013- Conduction of Fire Drill
Written by Peter Pan
According to the Enforcement Rules of Fire Services Act, fire drills should be conducted every half year, in order to comply with the regulations and to enhance the knowledge of fire safety for all colleagues. The fire workshops were held in March and September respectively (for the first and the second half of the year). The first one of the year focused on how to use the fire extinguisher, and the second one was scheduled for emergency evacuation drills. At the same time, the lecturer explained the points of fire prevention, how to extinguish fire, how to escape and so on. Real events were illustrated to aid the employees’ memory.
The fire-fighting team, which were gathered by PSI, led the employees to follow it step by step during the drill. PSI also invited Mr. Liao, the lecturer of Republic of China Fire Safety Association, as guidance counselor of the drill. For emergency evacuation, we only knew that we have to quickly escape from the dangerous place in the beginning. After the instruction by the lecturer, we know that there are knowledge and skills, "Body should be as close to the wall as possible; raise your head and stare in the front; bend your waist and lower your body to prevent from breathing in the smoke and then rush away." They prevent us from getting injured and help us run for life in short time. I believe with the experience of the practical exercises, colleagues have gained more knowledge in emergency evacuation.
After the drill, lecturer arranged a series of sessions on fire safety knowledge. Description of 3 coping steps in fire alarm situation are as follows: "Extinguish fire, Reporting and Evacuation." Generally speaking, kitchen is the place with the highest possibility to cause fire, so fire extinguishers shall be placed in the kitchen’s corner, where they are easily fetched, rather than be placed beside the bed. Some easy slogans were introduced to help learning how to use the fire extinguisher: "Pull, Pull, Push." The colleagues could apply their knowledge into practical use immediately. Another common cause of fire is electrical fire. The lecturer suggested that when we use an extension cord, specifications above 1650W/15A is the best choice. As the saying goes, "Prevention is the best policy; more preparation for disaster prevention, less damage done by the disaster.” Through the lecturer's detailed instruction humorous words, the whole course were made more lively and easy. Even such serious topic like this could end up with laughs.
