How to improve the product quality with customer by DFM
Author: Paul Liu
Ⅰ. The definition of DFM
DFM is abbreviation of Design for Manufacturability. It mainly means the research of the relationships between the parts of physical design and manufacturing system. The result is used on production design. Therefore the whole manufacturing system can be integrated for overall optimization. DFM can shorten product’s development cycle and lead to lower cost, which make the production more smoothly.

Our DFM flowchart is listed below: (the Chinese version is provided here for a reference)

Ⅲ. Introduction to the contents of DFM:
DFM can be improved further from the following aspects:
  1. Suitability of design between components and PCB: It includes selection of the components—thermal tolerance, electrostatics susceptivity, terminations/ Pin with the structure and material of plating, new packaging components/ Abnormally shaped components with PCB’s suitability and so on.
  2. Manufacturability design of PCB and FAB: It includes panel selection, plating requirements, PCB measurements and shape design, components layout, hole design, empty solder design, silk print design, pad design, etc.
  3. Design for assembly: including the matching between PCB panel and assembly materials, assembly craft, packing method, etc.
Ⅳ. The advantages of DFM:
Benefits can be gained from the professional DFM reports:
  1. Improved quality of products.
  2. Decreased cost. Considering production process requirements when making the design can save unnecessary processes, tools and labor cost.
  3. Shortened design cycle. Finding the problem early is the path to avoid repeated design modification.
